The Adelaide 36ers have finalised their #NBL20 roster, signing athletic swingman Obi Kyei to a two-year deal.
Standing at 206cm, the 24-year-old Australian brings to the team international experience playing in Great Britain, Germany and Spain.
The former Metro State college player returned to Australia last year and dominated with Logan Thunder in the Queensland Basketball League. Kyei averaged 20.3 points, 9.6 rebounds. 2.6 assists and 1.5 steal during the season, including a standout game where he scored 37 points in 33 minutes.
Currently the power forward has been impressing in Spain’s LEB Gold Basketball League, which is where he caught the attention of Adelaide 36ers Coach Joey Wright.
“Obi is very intriguing. He’s a guy that probably flew under the radar and in our process, we dug Obi up.
“He’s an athletic big man who can play D, block shots around the rim, runs the court, so he can keep up with our pace. A really great glue and team guy, so that was one of the things that was really important to us.
“Australian fans and Australia basketball fans will not know who he is, but once you get a glimpse of him you’ll be really happy,” Wright said.
Adelaide 36ers CEO Ben Kavenagh praised Wright’s ability to put unidentified talent on the map.
“Joey is renowned for finding and developing the best talent in the league and has a proven record of doing so.
“We are confident Kyei will join the list of hidden gems Joey has already unearthed and I look forward to seeing him flourish in our club environment,” Kavenagh said.
Kyei’s signing finalises the 36ers’ 2019-20 roster, which includes Daniel Johnson, Anthony Drmic, Harry Froling, Jack McVeigh, Brendan Teys, Kevin White, Daniel Dillion, Jacob Wiley, Ramone Moore and Deshon Taylor.
