Kansas, Auburn fall, 3OT thriller and more from men’s basketball Saturday
March Madness inches closer as January’s final Saturday, the 27th, provided excitement across the country. Here’s what you need to know from the men’s college basketball slate.
Kansas is now 3-3 across the last 18 days after losing to Iowa State 79-75. Kansas again struggled to get any scoring from its bench, as Parker Braun’s two points stand as the only made field goal from the bench in the last two games.
Meanwhile, Iowa State moves to 13-0 at home with its win. Tre King’s 21 points led the Cyclones to the home victory, adding in nine rebounds. Keshon Gilbert and Curtis Jones added in 16 points and 15 points, respectively.

Mississippi State picked up its second top-10 win of the season, taking down No. 8 Auburn 64-58. The Bulldogs handed the Tigers their second straight road loss.
Neither team led by more than six points in this tightly-contested game. Mississippi State had a great defensive day, holding Auburn to 33 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent shooting from three. Offensively, freshman Josh Hubbard, the SEC’s leading freshman scorer, scored 17 points in his first start to lead the Bulldogs to victory.

Texas Tech remains atop the Big 12 with a 85-84 win over Oklahoma, moving its conference record to 5-1. The Red Raiders have now won eight of the last 11 games against Oklahoma, winning the only regular season meeting between the two schools in 2024.
Chance McMillan starred for Texas Tech today, scoring a career-high 27 points with eight rebounds on 77 shooting from the field and 75 percent shooting from three (six makes). Pop Isaacs also had a big day, scoring 13 of his 18 points in the second half

Not one, not two, but three overtimes were needed for TCU to land a 105-102 upset of Baylor on the road. Baylor has now lost three straight games.
In the win, Jameer Nelson Jr. dropped 30 points, including the game-winning basket. Nelson scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes of the second half and 12 points in the three overtime periods.

Richmond handed Dayton its first loss since November, knocking off the Flyers 69-64. Both teams started slow — Richmond led 20-15 at halftime — but in the second half, both teams exploded for 49 points each.
Five Richmond scorers finished in double figures, led by Jordan King’s 17 points. Defensively, the Spiders held the Flyers to only 33 percent shooting from the field and 30 percent shooting from deep. With the win, Richmond now stands as the lone unbeaten team in the A-10.

For the first time since 2018, Wyoming defeated a ranked team, knocking off No. 24 Colorado State 79-76 in overtime.
Wyoming’s win was miraculous in a way. Colorado State was up 11 points with only one minute left. The Cowboys had to pull off the second-largest comeback in DI history to prevail. Luckily, Wyoming benefitted from Sam Griffin’s 24 points and Akuel Kot’s 18 points as it willed its way to a win.

Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley returned to now-Big East rival Providence for the first time since accepting the Hoya job last March. Cooley’s Hoyas entered with just one Big East win to Providence’s four, but that didn’t keep this Saturday contest from being a close game.
Georgetown led 69-68 with 2:32 to play before Providence’s Devin Carter went off to close the game. Carter scored 11 of Providence’s final 16 points to give the Friars the 84-76 win to spoil Cooley’s homecoming. Carter finished with 29 points in 38 minutes and his teammate Josh Oduro scored 22 points on 80 percent shooting from the field.
