AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO STAY IN MELBOURNE FOR THREE MORE YEARS

The School Championships are the largest event on the Australian Junior Championship calendar and have grown exponentially in recent years.

The number of team registrations has risen from 122 to 170 over the past three years while 2018 saw the record broken with 2,000 athletes representing more than 70 schools competing.

Open to three different age groups (Under-20, Under-17 and Under-15) across men’s and women’s tournaments, games cater to various skill levels across 20 divisions including Championship Division which pits the best schools from each state and territory against each other.

This year’s tournament will be run by Basketball Australia at the State Basketball Centre and Dandenong Stadium.

“We are delighted that the Australian School Championships will be remaining in Melbourne for the next three years where we have seen the tournament flourish,” said Basketball Australia Executive General Manager – Basketball, Paul Maley.

“The State Basketball Centre and Dandenong Stadium have the capacity to host even more athletes, teams and games so we are confident that the 2019 School Championships will be our biggest yet.”

In the past, the School Champs have brought some of our brightest talent to the fore including Australian Boomers Dante Exum and Patty Mills, Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals Lauren Jackson and Kristi Harrower as well as rising stars including Jack White and Jazmin Shelley.

The School Champs is open to all high schools in Australia and will run from December 2-6 in 2019.
