International Power forward Hans Vanwijn (205-PF-95) had a very impressive game in the last round for Antwerp, receiving a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 5.
The 24-year old player was the main contributor (20 points, three rebounds and three assists) to his team’s victory, helping them to crush Spirou (#8, 1-3) with 24-point margin 100-76. Antwerp is placed at 4th position in Belgian Euromillions League. They maintain a perfect record without any lost game in the league. But it’s just the very beginning of the season and Antwerp won both games without losing any. It’s too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. In the team’s last game Vanwijn had a remarkable 100.0% from 2-point range. He has many years of experience at Antwerp, through which he has constantly improved. Hans Vanwijn has solid league stats. He is in league’s top in points (2nd best: 18.0ppg), rebounds (7th best: 7.5rpg) and averages impressive 84.6% FGP and 80.0% from behind 3-point line.

The second best player in last round’s games was 25-year old Croatian Marin Maric (211-C-94, agency: BeoBasket) of Aalstar. Maric had a very good evening with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Bad luck as Aalstar was edged by league’s leader Mons-Hainaut (#2, 3-0) 69-68. This loss caused Aalstar to drop to 5th position in the standings. His team lost some distance to top teams. But 2-1 record is not bad and everything may still change. Maric is a newcomer at Aalstar, but is already one of team’s top players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 18.3ppg (#1). He also registered 10.0 boards per game.

Third on the list of top players last round was another Antwerp’s star – American guard Victor Sanders (196-G-95). Sanders scored 17 points. He was another key player of Antwerp, helping his team with a 100-76 easy win against the lower-ranked Spirou (#8, 1-3). Antwerp has a very good start of the season. But there were just 2 games played, so it’s too early to judge them at this stage. Sanders also has a very good start of the season with very strong stats. Sanders has a great season in Belgium. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league’s leaders in assists with 4.0apg (5th best).

The 26-year old power forward had a double-double of 17 points and fourteen rebounds, while his team outclassed Waregem (3-2) with 48-point margin 91-43. Gent Hawks is placed at 4th position in Belgian Top Division I. They would have been even better if they hadn’t lost two games earlier this season. Gent Hawks will need more victories to improve their 3-2 record. Vermoesen has many years of experience at Gent Hawks, through which he has constantly improved. Vermoesen has impressive league stats. He is in league’s top in points (7th best: 16.7ppg), rebounds (4th best: 10.0rpg) and averages solid 63.6% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round’s games was 31-year old former international point guard Geoffrey Hockins (188-PG-88, agency: Interperformances) of second-ranked Remant Basics Melsele-Beveren HSE A. Hockins impressed basketball fans with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Bad luck as Melsele lost that game 67-73 to league’s leader Ieper (#1, 4-0). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Melsele still maintains its place in the top 2 of the standings, even despite this loss. It was just his team’s 1st loss this season, while they won 4 other games. Hockins is one of the most experienced players at Melsele and has a reputation of one of team’s most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 20.2ppg (#3).

The third best performed player last round was Wout Verborgt (F-97) of Sijsele (#10). Verborgt scored 19 points and grabbed fifteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Verborgt’s great performance Sijsele lost 77-87 to the league’s current leader Gembo BBC (#3, 3-0). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of Sijsele ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 3 games, recording just two victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Verborgt could help Sijsele to bring them higher in the standings. Verborgt has a great season in Belgium. After only 5 games, he made it on the list of the league’s leaders in rebounds with 9.0rpg (6th best).

Oostende will play against Limburg United (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Basic-Fit Brussels will play against Kangoeroes (#6) in Mechelen and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Bottom-ranked Liege Basket (0-4) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their fourth consecutive match to fifth ranked Limburg United (3-1) 93-57 on Friday evening. Limburg United forced 23 Liege Basket turnovers. The best player for the winners was American Jared Wilson-Frame (196-96, college: Pittsburgh) who scored 22 points. The former international point guard Niels Marnegrave (191-87) chipped in 8 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Limburg United’s coach Brian Lynch felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Center Justin Kohajda (204-96) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds and the former international Ioann Iarochevitch (207-89, agency: LBM Management) added 13 points and 9 rebounds respectively for the guests. Limburg United have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. Loser Liege Basket still closes the standings with four games lost. They share the position with Leuven. Spirou – Antwerp 76-100

The game in Charleroi supposed to be also worth to mention about. Leader Antwerp Giants (2-0) played at the court of 8th ranked Spirou Charleroi (1-3). Antwerp Giants smashed Spirou Charleroi 100-76. Antwerp Giants shot 63.9 percent from the field. It was a great shooting night for Antwerp Giants especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.4 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Spirou Charleroi helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. International Hans Vanwijn (205-95) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!). American guard Victor Sanders (196-95, college: Idaho) contributed with 17 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winners. Five Antwerp Giants players scored in double figures.
