Okay, I think I have this figured out pretty well. Please let me know what you think. There is a difference between the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) and the BOAT (Best of All Time). Obviously the BOAT is the best player, the player who is superior to all the rest in sheer skill. He is the one, who, in his prime, is better than every other player in their prime. This one, is up for debate, as Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Oscar Robinson, Wilt Chamberlain, etc. are all viable contenders. However, when it comes to the GOAT, the Greatest of All Time, you have to separate yourself with something more than skill. You have to influence the sport, influence the fans, or influence the community that has a lasting impact in addition to your skill. For this reason, Michael Jordan has to be the GOAT in this discussion, because his influence on the culture of basketball is unparalleled. His mass commercialization of basketball shoes, his normalization of endorsements, his influence on basketball fashion, his iconic moments such as the free throw line dunk, and his borderline mythical status grants him the title of GOAT.
