Brisbane Bullets Assistant Coach CJ Bruton will get a taste of what made the Toronto Raptors NBA Champions, with the NBL legend joining the Raptors coaching staff for the NBA Summer League program.
Bruton departs Brisbane July 1 to link up with the Raptors prior to their Las Vegas Summer League program which features games against Golden State, Milwaukee, Indiana and New York in the initial rounds.
“It is a great opportunity for me to learn from a Club who have just become champions, to share what we do and take back with me some things that can help us keep getting better” said Bruton.
“It’s a unique opportunity to see how an NBA coaching staff operate in terms of preparation and in game coaching, from inside the team. There isn’t much better than learning from the Champions.”
Bruton will also have the opportunity to get a first hand look at potential Bullets import player options, with Summer League also representing the next stage in the Bullets recruitment process. Head Coach Andrej Lemanis and General Manager Richard Clarke will also be attending Summer League with the goal of filling out the Bullets 2019-20 roster.
The Bullets have three roster positions currently open, being starting Small Forward and Power Forwards and a back up Guard role following the season ending injury to Jeremy Kendle. All 3 positions can be filled by imports, however, the club is also looking at local player options for the guard role.
The Summer League focus will be on the Power Forward position, with the Club close to confirming the signing of a Small Forward subject to NBL approval of the contract.
That player will not however be Lamar Patterson, with the Club unable to meet the increased budget requested by Patterson’s agents following his successful initial NBL season.
“The player we are looking to bring in has high level experience in Europe and the G League and we received very consistent and positive feedback from every contact we talked to, across NBA and Euro teams. We are excited about what he will bring to the team” said Clarke.
A further announcement is expected next week following the completion of the NBL contract approval process.
