Birmingham vs Aston Villa
Today is a week since the appalling scenes during the Birmingham vs Aston Villa derby.
Lats Sunday a Birmingham City supporter shamed his club in a cowardly assault on Jack Grealish.
As Grealish’s back was turned, the Birmingham supporter ran onto the St Andrews pitch to whack the Villa star around the head with a cheap shot from behind.
Some Birmingham fans cheered and applauded the assault during the second city derby.
To Grealish’s credit, he didn’t react to the punch.
Instead he went on to score the winner for Villa in a 1-0 victory.
Birmingham fans are hailing Paul Mitchell
The shameful Birmingham City fan who attacked Grealish is called Paul Mitchell.
In the aftermath of the Villa game, Birmingham confirmed that Paul Mitchell has been served with a lifetime ban.
Moreover, the Birmingham supporter has been jailed for 14 weeks after pleading guilty to assault and illegally entering the field of play.
Yet, in a sad indictment on modern football fans, some Birmingham supporters are celebrating Paul Mitchell’s criminal behaviour.
Over the weekend, a couple of shameful pictures have appeared on social media.
In one image, two young boys were pictured holding a St George’s flag with the words “only one Paul Mitchell” written on it.
In a second photo, a group of Birmingham fans held up a poster which read: “Freedom of the city: Paul Mitchell”.
