Sale moved third in the Premiership thanks to their six-try bonus-point win against a stunned Harlequins.

Gabriel Ibitoye crossed for Quins but Akker van der Merwe broke back for the hosts after Rob du Preez’s penalty.

Sam James extended Sale’s lead with a neat finish before his brother Luke touched down on the brink of half-time.

Rob Webber and Chris Ashton sealed the bonus point in a heated second half, which saw Joe Marler, Marland Yarde and Matt Symons all sent to the sin-bin.

The victory, Sale’s fourth in the Premiership this season, moved the hosts up from seventh while the defeat leaves Quins in eighth place.

The hosts were without World Cup winner Faf de Klerk after he sustained a knee injury at the Rec in their narrow defeat by Bath, but that did not dampen their resolve in a comfortable performance.

Sale were up against it when Quins opened the scoring early on, when Ibitoye did well to chase a Marcus Smith loose pass and successfully ground the ball.

Some smart work soon after from Van der Merwe put Sale into the lead, while Byron McGuigan offloaded under pressure to allow Sam James to touch down and continue a strong spell for the hosts.

Van der Merwe came off as a precaution soon after but Sale eased to a comfortable half-time lead when Luke James ran through from the 22 having spotted a gap.

Quins’ task was made harder soon after the break when Marler was sent to the bin for a high arm on Jean Luc du Preez, but both sides were reduced to 14 men in a feisty second period.

Yarde saw yellow for leaping at ex-teammate Chris Robshaw in the aftermath of Webber’s try, while Symons was sent to the bin for throwing him to the ground straight afterwards.

Van Rensburg wrapped up a stunning win for Sale with their sixth try.
