Brazilian club Santos released a new crest for the 2023 season on Tuesday with a slight symbolic change. A crown in honor of King Pelé (1,116 games played and 1,091 goals scored in 18 seasons) was installed on the logo. The royal tribute is positioned above the badge, between the two stars referring to the national titles in 1962 and 1963. This iconographic novelty was approved last November: “Santos will use in professional, amateur and futsal football matches, both in the men’s and women’s categories, in all his jerseys, a crown on the existing stars of the world titles, as a permanent tribute to Edson Arantes do Nascimento, King Pelé»is written in article 103 of the text adopted by the paulista direction.
It’s not the first time Santos have honored Pele on the shirt. In 2019, when the Brazilian legend celebrated his 79th birthday, the club used the crown above the shield, but only on the uniform of player Soteldo, who wore the number 10 shirt, immortalized by Pelé. In 2011, the Peixe also honored the king on their uniform which the team used during the Copa Libertadores. Again, the tribute took the form of a crown encrusted on the number zero of the tunic 10 worn by Paulo Henrique Ganso.
