In an interview to appear in the German weekly From Zit, Sepp Blatter, the former president of FIFA, attacked Gianni Infantino, his successor. For him, the direction taken by the governing body is wrong: it should not reformat the World Cup and the Club World Cup. As a reminder, from 2026, the World Cup will be contested by 48 selections (against 32 today). At the same time, Gianni Infantino announced the creation of a Club World Cup which would bring together 32 teams.
“What is happening now is an over-commercialization of the game. We are trying to squeeze more and more of the lemon, for example with the final phase of the World Cup with 48 teams or now with a Club World Cup which should be seen as direct competition to the Champions League”Mr. Blatter said.
