The Sydney Kings have made a statement to the league by acquiring the signature of import point-guard Casper Ware on a multi-year deal.

The 28-year old helped lead Melbourne United to a Championship in 2017-18, and capped off another stellar season in NBL19 averaging 18.8 points and 4.4 assists to earn his third consecutive All-NBL First Team honours.

Head Coach Will Weaver was pleased to be re-uniting with Ware after spending time with him at the Philadelphia 76ers.

“It’s a rare privilege to team up again with one of the most enjoyable people I’ve ever coached” Weaver said.

“Clearly, adding a player of Casper’s calibre is exciting for our team but we are equally pleased to benefit from his competitiveness, character, and selfless mindset”.

“The best players always want great teammates so his choice to become a King is also a compliment to the men on our roster and a reflection of our commitment to provide Sydney with a team it will rally around” Weaver said.

Ware’s decorated career has taken him all over the world playing in Europe, the US and Australia. He had a brief stint with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2013-14 season, and spent time in Italy, Germany, China and France before landing in the NBL with Melbourne United as an injury replacement in 2016.

Known around the league for closing out games with his clutch buzzer-beaters, the acquisition of Ware brings a new level of potency to the already highly anticipated clashes between Sydney and Melbourne. It’s a feeling that Ware says he’s ready for.

“I’m really happy to be joining the Kings” Ware said.

“It was a big decision I had to make, but this is a new challenge for me and I’m excited to get stuck into it”.

“I’ll always respect the time I had in Melbourne because of winning a Championship there, but with Will and Andrew and the roster they are putting together at Sydney, I’m excited about what’s ahead” Ware said.

Currently playing with Stal Ostrów Wielkopolski in the Polish Basketball League, Ware will spend the next few weeks in Europe before joining the team prior to pre-season.

In what has been a big few weeks of announcements for the Kings, CEO Chris Pongrass was excited with the latest addition of Ware to the team.

“We’re really happy with how the roster is shaping up” Pongrass said.

“Casper’s an incredible talent in this league and we think he fits perfectly into what we are trying to build here at the Kings” Pongrass shared.

“We’ve kept a core group of players together from last season and we are bringing in guys that we know are not only a great talent on the court, but are also of high character as well, which is key to our approach”.

Casper Ware joins Andrew Bogut, Kevin Lisch, Brad Newley, Daniel Kickert and Jordan Hunter as the team’s contracted players for 2019-20, he will wear the number 22 jersey.
