Takeout Orders Grow as Online Ordering Catches On

Over 30 percent of consumers overall are now purchasing more takeout food than three years ago, according to Technomic’s 2016 Takeout & Off-Premise Dining Consumer Trend Report. Almost half of those aged 18 to 34 say the same. What’s more, 19 percent of all consumers say they purchase takeout 10 more times per month.

Consumers are more likely to order takeout or delivery from a restaurant’s own app or website, rather than an online ordering platform. However, 26 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds say they are using third-party delivery more often now than one year ago.

A third of consumers in that same age group also say they would use chatbots or emojis on social media and through text to order takeout.
