U-17 OCEANIA CHAMPS DAY 1 WRAP-UP

Both the Sapphires and the Crocs began their FIBA U17 Oceania Championship campaigns in style. In tropical New Calendonia, both teams overran their plucky Guamese opponents and put the rest of the tournament on notice.

Girls
It was good at the office for the Australian Girls. From the opening tip, the Sapphires completely controlled the game, keeping Guam scoreless in the first period while heaping on 47 points of their own.

Guam managed to put numbers on the scoreboard in the second quarter but the game remained entirely on the terms of the Australians. The Sapphires feasted off Guam’s turnovers for the entire game, scoring 76 points off turnovers and 39 points on the fast break.

By the time the final buzzer sounded the Sapphires had forced Guam into committing 47 turnovers.

Australia managed to cruise to a 144-9 victory. Eight of Australia’s ten players scored in double digits. Shaneice Swain led the onslaught with 21 points, eight assists, three rebounds and five steals.

Boys
The Crocs picked up where the Sapphires left off, dominating Guam from start to finish. Their size, athleticism and skill were just too much for Guam to overcome.

Australia’s length was also a potent weapon. They controlled the passing lanes all game and were able to exhibit their full-court offence to the fullest. Tamuri Wigness and Biwali Bayles did a terrific job finding the open cutters.

With their huge size advantage, the Crocs were content with driving to the basket all game, only attempting eight threes for the entire game. Despite making only two of their eight threes, the Crocs shot and incredible 77.78 per cent from two-point field goal attempts.

When the final buzzer sounded Australia had secured an impressive 121-30 victory. Blake Jones was Australia’s top scorer and rebounder with 26 points and eleven rebounds.
