Australia – Czech Republic 82:70

Australia completed the semifinal picture at the 2019 World Cup. They beat Czech Republic in Shanghai tonight to set up the semifinal battle versus Spain. Patrick Mills (183-PG-88, college: St.Mary’s, CA) came up with 24 points to pace the Boomers.
Australia and Czech Republic went neck and neck throughout the first period. The teams were tied at 17 following ten minutes of action. Australia managed to limit the European team to just 13 points in the second term to eke out a 33:30 halftime lead. The decisive push from the Aussies arrived in the third term. They ignited an 18:5 run to take a 57:43 lead. Australia entered the fourth period up by 15 points 63:48. Czech Republic bounced back with a 7:0 run at the start of the final term to narrow the gap. But Andrew Bogut (213-C-84, college: Utah) scored 6 points for the Boomers to keep them in control. Patrick Mills drained a timely three-pointer to give Australia an 80:70 lead with under a minute to go and they never looked back afterwards. Chris Goulding (192-G-88) delivered 14 points for the Boomers. Patrik Auda (204-PF-89, college: Seton Hall, agency: Octagon Europe) replied with 21 points for Czech Republic. Tomas Satoransky (201-PG-91, agency: Octagon Europe) had 13 points, 13 assists and 9 rebounds in the defeat.

The European team posted a 36:29 advantage late in the first half. They ended the half leading by 6 points 45:39. Donovan Mitchell (190-G-96, college: Louisville) took over for the USA in the third period. The guard sank 14 points in the quarter to help USA take a 66:63 lead at the final break. But France stayed in the game. Frank Ntilikina (196-PG-98) tied things up at 76 midway through the fourth quarter. Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert (216-C-92) added four quick points for France as they restored an 80:76 lead. Frank Ntilikina added a jumper to make it 82:76 for les Bleues with just over two minutes to go. Marcus Smart (193-G-94, college: Oklahoma St.) missed two free throws and Kemba Walker (185-PG-90, college: Connecticut) missed two of three free throws and France capitalized. They went 87:79 up and protected the lead in the reminder of the contest. Rudy Gobert came up with a monster double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds for France. Donovan Mitchell answered with game-high 29 points for USA. Marcus Smart had 11 points in the defeat.
