Spain – Australia 95:88 (2OT)

Spain are the first 2019 World Cup finalists. They outlasted Australia in double-overtime thriller in Beijing today. Marc Gasol (216-C-85) delivered 33 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the winners.
Spain eked out a narrow 22:21 lead after the opening quarter. Australia stiffened defensively in the second quarter. They limited Spain to just 10 points to take a 5-point halftime lead 37:32. The teams traded baskets throughout the third term. Australia entered the fourth frame up by four points 55:51. It all came down to the final seconds in regulation. Patrick Mills (183-PG-88, college: St.Mary’s, CA) gave Australia a 70:65 lead with under three minutes remaining. Ricky Rubio (193-G-90) and Marc Gasol responded with quick four points to pull Spain within one. The bunch of misses from both sides eventually led to two free throws from Marc Gasol to put Spain in front 71:70 with 8 seconds to go. Patrick Mills got fouled on the other end but converted just one of two free throws to send the game into overtime. Patrick Mills had another chance to win the game for the Boomers in the first overtime. He sank two free throws late in the extra period to give Australia an 80:78 lead. But Marc Gasol got fouled with four seconds remaining and calmly sank both attempts to tie things up at 80. Matthew Dellavedova (193-G-90, college: St.Mary’s, CA) tried to beat the buzzer with a floater but missed sending the game into the second overtime. Sergio Llull hit two three-pointers to make it 90:82 for Spain midway through the second extra period. Australia could not recover as Spain marched to a thrilling victory at the end. Ricky Rubio provided 19 points, 12 assists and 7 rebounds in the win. Patrick Mills replied with game-high 34 points for Australia. Nick Kay (206-F/C-92, college: MSU Denver) added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Boomers.

On the other side his team from his home land, The New Zeland Breakers are very glad to have him for the next two season, as he has an active contract with them.

Interesting is that the 30 years old guard In November 2011 was released by the Breakers due to a drug violation which forced him to sit out the 2011-12 season.
He consequently missed out on the Breakers back-to-back championship run that season.

Serbia will play for the fifth position at the 2019 World Cup. They beat USA in the classification round game in Dongguan tonight. Bogdan Bogdanovic (198-G/F-92) scored 28 points and issued 6 assists to lead the European team.
Serbia got to a furious start. They ignited a massive 32:7 run in the first ten minutes. But USA quickly regained composure. They fired 33 points in the second period to pull within 4 points at the big break 40:44. Serbia maintained the lead throughout the third term. And though USA cut the distance to 3 points they were still trailing heading into the fourth quarter 68:71. Serbia opened the final period with 7 points in a row as Vladimir Lucic (201-SF-89, agency: BeoBasket) restored a double-digit lead 78:68. Micic made it 85:72 for Serbia with under five minutes to go. Harrison Barnes (203-F-92, college: UNC) and Kemba Walker (185-PG-90, college: Connecticut) dragged USA within four points 87:91 with under a minute left in regulation.
